At Janssen Pest Solutions, we get asked about brown recluse spiders all the time—especially as the weather changes and pests start making their way indoors. It’s a common concern across Des Moines, Waukee, Ankeny, and other Central Iowa communities.

So here’s the truth: while the brown recluse spider is one of the most feared spiders in the country due to its venomous bite, confirmed sightings in Des Moines are extremely rare. In fact, most reports turn out to be mistaken identity.

What Is a Brown Recluse Spider?

The brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) is a small, non-aggressive spider typically found in the southern Midwest and South-Central U.S. It’s about the size of a quarter and is light to medium brown with a telltale violin-shaped mark on its back.

They prefer warm, dry, and undisturbed areas like attics, closets, or woodpiles—and true infestations usually occur in regions further south of Iowa.

Are Brown Recluse Spiders in Des Moines?

Technically, yes—but barely.

According to data from entomologists and Iowa State University, brown recluse spiders are not native to Iowa and are only occasionally found here, usually after being accidentally transported inside boxes or shipments from out-of-state.

The vast majority of spider sightings in Central Iowa turn out to be harmless species like wolf spiders, cellar spiders, or grass spiders—all of which are much more common and pose no threat to humans.

Why You Shouldn’t Panic

We understand why the fear exists. Brown recluse bites can cause irritation or, in very rare cases, skin necrosis. However, these outcomes are uncommon—even in areas where the spider is native.

In Des Moines and surrounding communities, it’s incredibly unlikely that the spider you found in your home is a brown recluse. Still, if you’re seeing a lot of spiders or are concerned about possible infestations, that’s where Janssen Pest Solutions can help.
